Most of the nation baked in hot, dry weather today that closed schools, cut water supplies and made toilet flushing and lawn watering a luxury in parts of upstate New York. Prayers for rain went unanswered in the Plains.

The mid-June heat wave pushed the mercury into the high 80s and 90s in dozens of U.S. cities. In Boston, a high of 97 exceeded the previous record of 96 set in 1956. Near Fostoria, Ohio, several hundred worshipers prayed for rain and a good crop season at an open-field Mass. About the only thing coming from above was more sunshine.
