Pasadena : Royal Society Selection

Philip Saffman, professor of applied mathematics at Caltech, has been elected a fellow of the Royal Society of London, which chooses its members for their outstanding research in the natural sciences.

The Royal Society said Saffman was named for his important contributions to fluid mechanics. He is a native of England and came to Caltech in 1964.

A Caltech spokesman said the Royal Society was founded in 1660 and is among the oldest and most prestigious scientific societies in the world, with about 1,000 members.
