A former California Highway Patrol officer was convicted today of first-degree murder in the death of a 20-year-old motorist who prosecutors said was ordered down an isolated freeway off-ramp and then strangled.

Craig Peyer, 38, of Poway, a 13-year CHP veteran, was the second officer in the 58-year history of the agency to be charged with killing a motorist while on duty.
