Obituaries : Walter Framer; Early Creator of Radio Quiz Shows
Walter (Walt) Framer, who helped bring quiz shows to radio while that medium was still in its infancy, died Tuesday in Miami Beach, Fla.
His son, Ladd, said his father was 80.
The younger Framer said his father began doing sidewalk interviews on Pittsburgh radio stations in the 1920s. From those came the concept of “Strike It Rich,” which he brought to radio in 1947.
Other shows that Framer either created, produced or wrote included “Break the Bank,” “The Big Payoff,” “For Love or Money,” “Ladies Be Seated” and “The Black Hood.”
“At one time, my father was the largest supplier of daytime programming for the networks,” Framer said.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; six other children; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
