Burmese troops patrolled Rangoon to enforce emergency measures in the wake of street battles that left at least six people dead. The troops were posted at key points throughout the capital to ensure compliance with a nighttime curfew imposed for the next two months. The streets were quiet, with public gatherings forbidden and most colleges and universities closed. The one-party regime of military strongman Ne Win, 77, who seized power in 1962, has faced increasing discontent fueled by rising prices and lower living standards.
