Wolfgang Schmidt, previous world record-holder in the men’s discus, set a West German record during an international track and field meet at Hafnarfjordhur, Iceland.

Schmidt threw the discus 223-feet, 10-inches, in winning the competition and bettering the West German mark of 223-4.

Schmidt, previously an East German, won a silver medal during the 1976 Montreal Olympics. But he was jailed in 1982 for 15 months for “illegal Western contacts,” and barred from sports upon his release. He was allowed to emigrate to West Germany last October after international pressure from fellow athletes.
