Tony Meza of San Dimas, a power equipment operator, has received the annual county Department of Public Works safety award. Meza, who has been with the county for 31 years, has not had an industrial accident or injury.

Raymond Ball of Claremont has been appointed to the new county Task Force to Promote Self-Esteem and Personal and Social Responsibility. The task force was established by the County Board of Supervisors at the request of the state Legislature to help overcome crime and violence, drug abuse and alcohol abuse, teen-age pregnancy, child abuse, welfare dependency and the failure of some children to reach their potential.

Douglas McClure, captain of the Temple City sheriff’s station, has been reappointed to the Foothill Area Community Services board of directors. The purpose of the board, which reports to the County Board of Supervisors, is to develop and coordinate a plan to alleviate poverty in Duarte, Monrovia, Pasadena, Altadena, Sierra Madre and South Pasadena.

Dorothy May Hawk of San Dimas has been honored by the County Board of Supervisors for her volunteer work with the county Probation Department. She received the Nelle Reagan Humanitarian Award. Among other volunteers honored are John Mahoney of San Dimas and David Pontious of Claremont.

Alden Dunn, chairman of the Music Department at El Monte High School, has received the county Office of Education Robert Runge Music Award for his contributions to the field of music education. Dunn is former president of the Covina Valley Music Education Assn.

James Helsper of Pasadena, associate clinical professor of surgery at USC, has been elected president of the Society of Head and Neck Surgeons. Helsper is a former president of the Los Angeles County unit of the American Cancer Society and a former member of the board of governors of the American Federation of Oncologic Surgeons.

Pamela Swift, city clerk of Pasadena, has been named City Clerk of the Year by the City Clerks Assn. of California for her outstanding service to the association. Swift was president of the association in 1984-85 and has trained other city clerks.

Judith A. Weiss has been named assistant city manager of Pasadena, making her the highest-ranking female executive in the city’s municipal government. Weiss, who has worked for the city for eight years, supervises the Administrative Services Agency and Planning/Housing/Development Services.

Carolyn Hunter Denham has been appointed associate vice president for academic programs at Cal Poly Pomona. She is the associate dean of graduate studies and research at Cal State Long Beach.

Freda Weegar of West Covina has been named executive director of the Mt. San Antonio College Foundation. The foundation supports the college through fund raising and student scholarships. Weegar also serves on the board of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Linda Harding has been named principal of Los Altos High School in the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District. Harding previously was principal of Santa Fe Middle School in the Monrovia Unified School District and earlier served as assistant principal of pupil personnel services at Monrovia High School.

Kathy Furnald has been named principal of El Monte High School in the El Monte Union High School District. She is assistant principal for instruction at Arroyo High School.

Rea Kirk has been named director of YWCA-WINGS, a shelter for battered women sponsored by the San Gabriel Valley YWCA in West Covina. Kirk previously held the same position at the YWCA Sweetwater County Advocate Safe House Program in Rock Springs, Wyo.
