“We thought it was an idea whose time had come,” John D. H. Kane, president of the Metropolitan Club, the last major men-only club for Washington’s elite, said in announcing the club’s vote to accept women members. The vote was taken after the Supreme Court upheld a New York City law aimed at requiring the admission of women to big, private clubs where important business dealings often occur. Kane refused to discuss any specifics of the vote or the procedures for acceptance into the exclusive 2,200-member club.
