The World : Victory in Sight, Iraq Says
Iraq said that the last Iranian soldier has been driven from its territory on the southern war front, and President Saddam Hussein boasted that victory in the nearly eight-year-old war is now in sight. A high command statement said Iraqi troops had launched a “wide-ranging attack” to eject all Iranian forces from southern Iraqi territory, where Iran until recently held the advantage. The mopping-up operation came a day after Iraq claimed that its elite Presidential Guards had recaptured the oil-rich Majnoon Islands. In Tehran, Iran accused Iraq of killing and wounding thousands of people in renewed chemical weapon attacks.
