Local News in Brief : Hotel, Golf Course Slated

The last vacant Palos Verdes Peninsula land owned by the pioneer Vanderlip family is slated to become a golf course serving a proposed hotel and conference center at the site that was Marineland.

The Monaghan Co., developer of the hotel, announced that it has obtained the 316-acre tract by purchasing the Filiorum Corp., which comprises 13 descendants of financier Frank Vanderlip Sr. He bought 16,000 acres--most of the peninsula--in 1913 for $1.5 million. The price paid for Filiorum, whose only asset was the land, was not disclosed.

The property--about a mile east of a 102-acre Monaghan site at Long Point--is on the north side of Palos Verdes Drive South between Barkentine Road and the Wayfarers’ Chapel in Rancho Palos Verdes. In addition to the 18-hole golf course, an equestrian center and riding trails may be included, Monaghan spokesman John E. Corcoran said.

Monaghan plans to open in 1991 a 600-room hotel, 40,000 feet of conference space, restaurants, 115 rooms in four smaller buildings, an athletic club and the golf course.
