Philippine gunmen using automatic rifles and a grenade launcher attacked a leftist university president, the second attempt against him in seven months. The ambush occurred as Nemesio Prudente and his party approached the Polytechnic University of the Philippines in Manila. Three bodyguards were killed, and Prudente, five aides and a pedestrian were wounded, none seriously, police said. President Corazon Aquino called the attack “brutal, brazen and contemptible.” Sen. Ernesto Maceda, chairman of the Senate’s defense committee, criticized police for failing to maintain order in the capital.
