An Anaheim man and his teen-age son were found safe Friday morning in an Angeles National Forest canyon after they became lost on a backpacking trip.

Three rescue teams from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department searched for Tom Marshall, 36, and Doug Marshall, 15, after they were reported missing at about 6 p.m. Thursday by Tom Marshall’s wife, Teri.

The searchers found the pair at about 9:35 a.m. at a campsite they had made in Little Rock Canyon, Sheriff’s Deputy Richard Dinsmoor said.

Tom Marshall had missed a trail during a cross-country hike and had decided to remain in the canyon through the night, Dinsmoor said.

“He was an experienced hiker, and they would have been able to walk out with no problem,” the deputy added.

Marshall and his son had left Anaheim a week ago to go backpacking and camping in the forest, which is northeast of Pasadena, Dinsmoor said.

The search for them was begun after Marshall failed to call his wife at 4 p.m. Thursday as he had planned.

Searchers in a helicopter spotted the Marshalls’ car Thursday night parked at a trail head near a campground on Angeles Crest Highway in the forest.

The hikers were found the next morning when the search resumed.

Dinsmoor said the Marshalls had plenty of food and other provisions and had been in no real danger. A helicopter airlifted them to their car.
