Mayor on City Hall

Share

I would like to take this opportunity to voice my opposition to a proposal to build a new City Hall complex on Lane Field.

San Diego’s waterfront is one of the most scenic areas in our town. Dotted by parks, restaurants and historic sailing vessels, it is definitely not the place for a 25-story high-rise. San Diego’s bayfront is already in danger of becoming a wall of skyscrapers. We should seek to preserve the bay’s scenic beauty, not destroy it.

The bayfront is a place enjoyed by San Diegans and tourists alike. As a city dependent on tourism, we cannot afford to destroy one of our most beautiful attractions. To build City Hall on this valuable piece of land would be inappropriate and foolish. It would discourage tourism by creating an eyesore on our beautiful bay.

The waterfront is an area for enjoying a relaxing view of the bay, strolling through parks and visiting educational maritime museums. This is an area for the people to enjoy, and it should stay that way. In keeping with this theme, I propose that the area be used as a site for the new central library and bayside aquarium.

Let’s give the people, who really enjoy and use this area, another good reason to visit the waterfront.
