Violence-plagued local elections in India left at least eight people dead and 28 injured in northern Uttar Pradesh state, the Press Trust of India reported. At least 65 people were arrested, the news agency said. More than 25,000 villages took party in Friday’s balloting for local councils, with another round of polling scheduled for Tuesday. Meanwhile, suspected Sikh separatists gunned down a local leader of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s ruling Congress-I party near Amritsar, in northern Punjab state, police said. Also, five Sikhs shot and killed a man in Sotal, about 25 miles northwest of Chandigarh, the capital of Punjab, the United News of India reported.
