The companies that operate America’s largest oil field announced a project to recover so much more oil from Prudhoe Bay that they claimed it amounts to a major new oil discovery. Thanks to the $350-million project, Prudhoe Bay will give up another 400 million barrels of oil--an amount “equivalent to a major new oil field,” said Susan Andrews, spokeswoman for Arco Alaska Inc., operator of the expansion project for the major Prudhoe Bay producers, Standard Alaska Production Co., Exxon and Arco. The project will generate an estimated 2,885 jobs--1,750 construction jobs in Alaska and the rest of the jobs in other states building the prefabricated modules for shipment to Prudhoe Bay in the summer of 1990, Andrews said.
