A federal magistrate in New Bern, N.C., ordered two Robeson County Indians, jailed since their Feb. 1 arrest for the seizure of a Lumberton newspaper, released on bond over government objections. Federal Magistrate Charles McCotter freed Timothy Jacobs, 30, and Eddie Hatcher, 19, on $100,000 unsecured bond, but he severely restricted their movements and actions while they await trial on charges of taking 17 people hostage at the Robesonian newspaper. McCotter, ruling after a 2 1/2-hour hearing, made clear that he was bowing to a decision from the U.S. 4th Circuit Court of Appeals, which ruled last Thursday that Hatcher and Jacobs, both Tuscarora Indians, were denied a speedy detention hearing after their arrest.
