The City Council has approved a final $66.8-million budget for the fiscal year that started July 1, up 13% over last year’s budget of $59 million.

The budget includes money for 15 new positions in the Police Department.

The city is projecting a $3.2-million budget surplus at the end of the new fiscal year, budget manager Jackie Lewis said.

City officials said the surplus will result from an 8% increase in sales tax revenues, $1 million left over from last year’s budget and increased property tax revenues.

Included in the budget is $5 million to renovate the police building, fire headquarters and the city’s maintenance yard, Lewis said.

Lewis said the city routinely adopts its final budget on the first Tuesday in July, which this month fell five days into the new fiscal year.
