A team of researchers at the National Cancer Institute has received approval for a large-scale study of cancer deaths among people living near nuclear facilities, the team’s leader said. Dr. John Boice, chief of radiation epidemiology at the institute, said the final go-ahead for the project came from an NCI committee on technical evaluation of scientific protocols. The U.S. study was prompted by a British survey completed last year that found that children and young adults up to the age of 20 who lived near any type of nuclear facility had an increased incidence of leukemia.
