Local News in Brief : Boaters to Get Voice in Harbor

Share

The Redondo Beach City Council voted unanimously this week to add an eighth member to the city’s Harbor Commission to represent the interests of boaters in King Harbor.

The commission is responsible for issuing development permits in the harbor--as the Planning Commission does for other areas of the city--and serves as a “sounding board for ideas,” said Harbor Director Sheila Schoettger.

Currently, one commissioner must be a person who leases property in King Harbor from the city. But boaters have wanted their own representative because they claim that recreational needs have suffered because of development in the harbor.

The remaining six commissioners are chosen from a list of 13 professions, including a structural engineer, an attorney, an architect and a real estate broker. In the future, one of these positions will be reserved for a boater, and the Harbor Commission will be reduced to seven members again when the terms of four current commissioners expire in October, 1989.
