Hope Spivey and Phoebe Mills tied for the women’s lead, and Dan Hayden, spurred by a perfect 10 on the parallel bars, led the men’s division following compulsory exercises Thursday night in the U.S. Gymnastics Champioships.

Spivey, of Allentown, Pa., and Mills, competing for Houston’s Bela Karolyi Gym, each had a combined 46.5 score following their four compulsory exercies.

Oklahoma senior Kelly Garrison-Steves was third with 46.32 points, followed by Doe Yamashiro of Gardena with 46.26 and Stacey Gunthorpe of Huntington Beach with 46.02.

Hayden, of Woodward, Pa., had a combined score of 58.75 after the six men’s events, and Charles Lakes of Newhall was in second place with 58.25 points.

Tim Daggett, a 1984 Olympian, finished last in the compulsories, skipping the vault, in which he suffered a severely broken leg in the World Championships last November. Daggett’s best scores were a 9.85 on parallel bars and a 9.7 on the pommel horse.

There are 130 men and women competing, with 40% of their scores counting toward a spot on the U.S. team. The remaining 60% will be determined in the Olympic trials Aug. 4-7 at Salt Lake City.
