Nicaraguan police used tear gas and baton charges to break up an opposition rally by about 2,000 people in Nandaime, 35 miles south of Managua. Police said they arrested 28 people, including Carlos Huembes, president of the Democratic Coordinator, a coalition of conservative opposition parties, unions and business groups that called the demonstration to demand that the Sandinista government step down.
