Police said today they arrested a man armed with a Molotov cocktail labeled with Secretary of State George P. Shultz’s name near the prime minister’s residence shortly before Shultz arrived for a meeting.

Two constables on Saturday arrested a 19-year-old man who carried a plastic bag containing a Molotov cocktail with “G. Shultz” written on it, matches and a knife, Megat Hamid Megat Jaafar, the city’s deputy chief of police, told reporters.

The man was found sitting on a slope by an access road to Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamed’s home 50 minutes before Shultz’s motorcade was due to pass.

Megat said police were still investigating the background of the arrested man but believed that the incident may have been related to the downing of an Iranian passenger plane over the Persian Gulf by a U.S. Navy ship last week.
