Robert (Bobby) DeBarge, one of two members of the singing DeBarge family charged by federal agents with cocaine trafficking, was freed on $50,000 bond Monday--but only if he enrolls in an in-patient drug treatment program. DeBarge, 32, and his brother, Jonathan (Chico) DeBarge, 22, both of Pasadena, were indicted along with five others last Thursday in Grand Rapids, Mich., on federal charges that they tried to smuggle a kilogram (2.2 pounds) of cocaine from Los Angeles to Michigan during the last week of June. Prior to U.S. Magistrate Joseph Reichmann’s order for conditional freedom for Robert DeBarge, prosecutor Steven Madison had argued that DeBarge should be held without bail because he would flee if released. But defense attorney David Elden said that DeBarge would remain in town because he is scheduled to work on a new album this week. Jonathan DeBarge was also released Tuesday after posting an unsecured $500,000 bond in a Grand Rapids court.
