West Covina : Water-Saving Plan Adopted

The City Council adopted a voluntary water conservation program Monday, which calls for residents and the city to reduce the amount of water they use. The action came in response to a Metropolitan Water District request that customers reduce consumption by 10% while the area is in its second consecutive dry year.

The plan calls for the city to turn off its fountains and avoid wasteful watering, refrain from washing paved areas and fix leaky plumbing.

The city is urging residents to avoid watering lawns during the hot hours each day, turn off decorative fountains unless the water is recycled, install pool covers, fix leaky plumbing, and avoid hosing down driveways and sidewalks.

According to the plan, the city will consider mandatory conservation measures, such as those in effect in Northern California’s Alameda County, if the 10% reduction is not achieved or if the state declares a drought situation.

Councilman Robert Bacon said he expects the measure to be successful. “It worked well in the last drought, so I feel it should work this time,” he said.
