Homeless Dilemma

The column “Homeless Are More Than Homeless” by Maxene Johnston (Op-Ed Page, June 29) is inspirational. By setting self-sufficiency as the goal of ending homelessness, instead of merely providing temporary shelters, we act to create a permanent solution to the problem.
The federal government must lead the way in solving the homeless problem by working with state and local governments and the private sector to see that there is sufficient low-cost housing for those who need it.
We must make hunger and homelessness a campaign issue which presidential candidates Michael Dukakis and George Bush must address and make a leading issue on their platforms.
