Homeless Dilemma

Congratulations to Johnston for her column and even more so for her work at the Weingart Center. She reminds us of our power as individuals. Many of the major social changes that have occurred in the last 100 years have come about because average people have made demands upon their political leaders to take the steps needed to transform a problem into an opportunity. Such an outcry from the public is called for now regarding the issues of hunger and homelessness in this country.

The Campaign to End Hunger and Homelessness is asking us to call upon both Bush and Dukakis to commit to a plan, whereby this unacceptable situation would substantially be ended by the conclusion of their first term as President. The campaign is a coalition of over 30 domestic organizations including Hands Across America, the U.S. Conference of Mayors, the National Urban League, the Childrens Defense Fund, and the National Council of Churches, who are asking the next President for a public announcement of his intention to commit to a practical strategy towards what most Americans know is a doable task.
