Greece said today that a Frenchman was among guerrillas who carried out an attack on board a tourist ship this week, killing nine people and wounding 80.

The government issued a photograph of the man and identified him as Roland Vigneron, 23, who died in a hospital after Monday’s attack.

The government said eight people on the tourist vessel City of Poros identified Vigneron and said he joined in the attack.

The French Embassy in Athens had no immediate comment.

The vessel, carrying 471 passengers was heading for Trocadero near Athens after a one-day island cruise when gunmen hurled grenades and opened fire with sub-machine guns.

French tourists suffered the heaviest casualties, with 34 wounded and one dead, 21-year-old Isabelle Bismuth. Vigneron is the second confirmed French fatality.

The government said two men and two women on the vessel had not yet been identified.
