Garden Grove Council Gives $6,500 Grant to Symphony
The Garden Grove Symphony received $6,500 Monday night from the Garden Grove City Council.
Actually, the grant is only costing the city $500, according to Barbara Ness, an orchestra spokeswoman. Ness explained that the orchestra had returned $6,000 that remained from $38,500 the city had granted the previous year.
The orchestra originally sought $20,000 this year, and is still seeking the other $13,500, Ness said. But, she added, the orchestra is willing to wait until a report is completed by a 15-member advisory committee appointed by the council to consider subsidy requests. The committee is expected to meet Tuesday, according to the orchestra’s marketing director, Yaakov Dvir-Djerassi.
The $6,500 grant given Monday was proposed by Councilman Raymond T. Littrell and supported by Mayor J. Tilman Williams and Councilmen Walter E. Donovan and Milton Krieger. Councilman Robert F. Dinsen voted against the proposal. The money will be used to help pay musicians, conductor Edward Peterson, and guest artists.
