Gun control opponents have gathered enough signatures to force a referendum on Maryland’s new handgun control law, Secretary of State Winfield M. Kelly Jr. said Tuesday.

Kelly declared 35,254 of 48,435 petition signatures valid, according to a spokesman for Gov. William Donald Schaefer. An official said 33,045 valid signatures were needed to put the issue on the November ballot.

The legislation approved earlier this year bans the sale of cheap handguns and establishes a nine-member committee to decide what handguns may be manufactured and sold in the state.
