Bellflower : Overdue Trash Bills Pour In

In a campaign to collect $16,800 in past-due trash bills, the Bellflower City Council held a public hearing this week, requesting residents owing money to appear and explain why they have not paid their bills of $6.42 per month.

Early this month, the city sent out hundreds of letters to residents who are shown to owe money to Cal-San/Cal-Bin disposal company. In the letter, residents were informed that if their accounts were not cleared, the city would “consider levying an assessment against your property to pay the delinquent account.”

The threat of a property lien proved effective, city spokesman Craig Nealis said. Since the letter was distributed, $10,900 in past-due accounts has been collected.

Only three residents attended the public hearing to defend themselves against the city’s claim that they owed money.
