Hungarian Coins Too Costly to Mint

Inflation, devaluations, taxes and a rise in metal prices have made Hungary’s small-denomination coins more expensive to produce than they are worth, the Hungarian news agency MTI said Friday.

“Should there be another price increase, only the 10-forint and 20-forint coins would retain more value than their production costs,” it said.

The 20-forint coin, worth about 37 cents, is made of nickel, copper and aluminum. All others, from the tiny 10-filler (0.2-cent) to the 10-forint (18-cent), are made of alloys of aluminum and copper, whose world prices are rising.
