El Diario, a pro-guerrilla newspaper in Lima, Peru, published what it called Maoist rebel commander Abimael Guzman’s first interview since he became the leader of the Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) group 10 years ago. Guzman was quoted as saying that the rebels have restored severed ties with international Communist movements, but he declined to name them. He also attacked “Yankee imperialism” in the interview, which the newspaper said was conducted by editor Luis Arce “somewhere in the Andes” for 12 hours begining July 15. Guzman, believed to be 48, has not been seen publicly in so long that many Peruvian officials had believed he was dead.
