Charles H. Mullen, president and chief executive of American Tobacco Co., has been elected chairman of the cigarette maker. American Tobacco is a subsidiary of American Brands, a holding company that has core businesses of tobacco, distilled spirits and financial services. Cigarette brands made by the tobacco subsidiary include Pall Mall, Lucky Strike and Carlton. Mullen, 60, succeeds Thomas C. Hays as chairman. Hays was named president and chief executive of the tobacco company’s parent earlier this year.
