A coalition of five political parties nominated the leader of the conservative, business-backed Thai Nation Party to become Thailand’s next prime minister. Chatichai Choonhavan, 66, the first elected official to be chosen for the post in 12 years, said Parliament’s many factions will make the nation difficult to govern. He accepted the nomination after Prem Tinsulanonda turned down a third four-year term. Chatichai is a former army general and acting deputy prime minister. The coalition that nominated Chatichai was formed after no party won a plurality in Sunday’s parliamentary election.
