The “Tell a Friend” Phon-A-Thon, held at Mike Glickman Realty Co. in Woodland Hills, raised more than $11,000 Monday to benefit the Los Angeles chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International. Along with 200 real estate agents, Allison Smith of “Kate and Allie” and daytime soap stars Billy Hufsey, James Reynolds and Joe Colligan of “Days of Our Lives” called friends and business associates throughout the San Fernando Valley for donations that will go toward diabetes research. Their efforts will be recognized on the “Thanks For Giving” television special in November.

Nine Valley residents have been nominated for the 1988 Fernando Award, which will be presented Nov. 5. The nominees are Paula Boland, Granada Hills; Murray Fink, Tarzana; Ira Freeman, Sun Valley; Lee Hamer, Mission Hills; Lou Marino, Northridge; Sue McCoy, Canoga Park; Clyde Porter, Woodland Hills; Fred M. Thomas, Chatsworth; and Lucille Turner, Studio City. Established in 1959, the award is given for community leadership, volunteer work and civic contributions.
