Local News in Brief : DWP Seeks Rate Hike
Los Angeles residents would pay 9.6% more for their water and 4% more for their electricity under a proposal by the Board of Water and Power Commission.
The new rates would take effect Oct. 1 if approved by the City Council and Mayor Tom Bradley. The water board voted Thursday to approve the increases.
The proposed rates include an increase in water prices of 4% for lifeline customers, low-income seniors and the disabled.
The Department of Water and Power is seeking the rate increase to pay for new water quality testing equipment needed to meet tougher state and federal standards, said Duane Georgeson, the department’s assistant general manager. Because of water conservation, the department has to charge more to keep revenues at current levels, he added.
