The Rev. Al Sharpton, folk singer Pete Seeger and 10 others went to jail for 15 days in Albany, N. Y., for blocking traffic during a rally for Tawana Brawley, the 16-year-old black girl who claims she was raped by a gang of white men. The demonstrators were convicted of disorderly conduct after a three-day trial during which Sharpton snored and banged his head against a glass wall. He and Seeger and the others led the April 4 gathering to protest the state’s handling of the Brawley case. Sharpton and other advisers have counseled the girl and her family not to cooperate with authorities investigating the alleged assaults.
