Cipher Data Products, a manufacturer of tape and disc-drive devices for computer data storage, reported sharp increases in profit and revenue for the fourth quarter ended June 30. Net income totaled $5.1 million on sales of $55.9 million, up from a profit of $1 million on sales of $42.2 million for the year-before quarter.

The fourth-quarter profit includes $3.4 million in pretax income related to back royalties owed by Rexon Inc. under terms of recently settled patent litigation. Cipher Data expects to receive more from Rexon.

Claiming that Cipher Data is displaying a “recovery momentum,” company President Gary Liebl said in a prepared statement that orders booked over the quarter totaled $50 million, up 48% from the total last year. Cipher Data’s cash position is $56 million, up 95% from a year ago.
