Hyundai Motor America sold 18,160 of its Excel subcompacts in July, the Garden Grove-based company said Wednesday.

That is down sharply from July, 1987, when Excel sales totaled 30,472 units, the company’s record month in the U.S. market.

Year-to-date sales for the Excel are 166,653. Cumulative sales at the end of July, 1987, were 157,528.

In a prepared release, Hyundai blamed the sales slowdown on a recently settled strike at Hyundai’s only auto manufacturing plant in Ulsan, South Korea. “The strike has impacted the supply of vehicles and temporarily slowed the company’s sales pace,” the release states. “However, Hyundai is rebuilding its supply of cars now that production has resumed and sales are returning to normal levels.”
