WASHINGTON — The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday gave approval for a drug that is the most widely prescribed anti-arthritis medication outside the United States.
More than 64 million prescriptions were written worldwide last year for diclofenac sodium, which has the trade name Voltaren. But U.S. doctors had not been authorized to prescribe the drug pending the outcome of FDA-monitored clinical trials, which have been completed.
Voltaren is a non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drug that blocks the body’s production of prostaglandins, which contribute to the symptoms of arthritis.
“It’s very potent for relieving the pain, tenderness and swelling associated with arthritis,” said Dr. Gilbert Bluhm, who conducted clinical trials of the drug.
