Poland’s last jailed dissident pacifist, Slawomir Dutkiewicz, was released after agreeing to perform community service instead of serving in the army. Dutkiewicz, 21, said by telephone from his home in Bydgoszcz, about 140 miles northwest of Warsaw, that he felt weak after a nine-month hunger strike. Dutkiewicz was the last jailed member of the dissident Freedom and Peace pacifist group, which has campaigned for the right of conscientious objectors to do alternative service.
