‘Greenhouse Down to Earth’

Your excellent editorial “Life in the Greenhouse” (July 26) is very much to the point. The basic thoughts should be pushed hard by that part of the public that cares.

The public is not going to lower its comfort of living no matter what, so no more effort should be wasted on that factor. However, several important attacks on pollution can be made. Gasahol and pure alcohol should be pushed as fuels. California is active in this and deserves compliments. The fact that such use of alcohol is more expensive than petroleum products today is not a factor--the overall cost to all Americans will be significantly less with much more use of alcohol as a fuel. Aside from the matter of pollution, the substitution of an annually grown product versus one that has taken millions of years to produce is not fully appreciated by the public.

All nuclear-electric plants should be placed in full production and those on which construction has been stopped should be completed and placed in service. The NRC should place a safety monitoring team of at least four qualified persons at each such plant to make sure that rules are followed.
