The United States notified the Soviet Union that on Sept. 8, it will begin the destruction of nuclear missiles that are being eliminated under the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty. Pershing missiles will be destroyed at the Army’s Longhorn Arsenal in Marshall, Tex., an Army official said. The Soviet Union, meanwhile, began the destruction of launchers and vehicles for SS-20 missiles as U.S. inspectors watched at a military base near Sarny in the western Ukraine, the Tass news agency said. Destruction of SS-12 missiles began last Monday. The INF treaty calls for the scrapping over the next three years of all ground-launched missiles with ranges between 300 miles and 3,400 miles.
