TORONTO — Ed Broadbent, leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party, escaped injury when his small charter plane crash-landed on a runway in northern Quebec.
The landing gear of the Merlin turboprop collapsed Monday when the plane touched down at Rouyn-Noranda Airport, and both engines were torn away as the aircraft slid on its left wing.
Broadbent, 52, and six other people on board escaped injury.
Broadbent’s socialist party is the third largest party in Canada, with 32 seats in Parliament. He was on a campaign trip at the time of the accident.
