Bruce Third in Swim Trials

Tami Bruce of Chula Vista tied for third with Whitney Hedgepeth of Virginia in the finals of the women’s 200 freestyle at Tuesday’s U.S. Olympic swimming trials in Austin, Tex.

Bruce’s time of 2 minutes 0.31 seconds was two seconds off the winning time of Mitzi Kremer of Florida and just more than one second behind Mary Wayte of Washington. The top two finishers in each event qualify for the Olympic team.

BASKETBALL

San Diego-based Athletes in Action will open their 1988-89 season Aug. 30 against the United States Olympic team, probably in the Los Angeles Sports Arena. The game will culminate an eight-game tour across the country for Coach John Thompson’s Olympians.

ESPN will televise the Western Athletic Conference game between San Diego State and Brigham Young on Feb. 9 at the San Diego Sports Arena, an ESPN spokesman said. The starting time for the game has been moved one hour later to 8:30 p.m. to accommodate the telecast.
