Two Italian geologists held hostage by Ethiopian rebels for nine months have been released, the Italian Foreign Ministry said in a statement released in Rome. Salvatore Barone, 27, and Paolo Bellini, 36, arrived in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum, the statement said. It gave no details on the pair’s release but said it came after a “long and complex action” by the Italian government. The two men were abducted last Nov. 16 by Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party rebels while working on a development project in northwestern Ethiopia.
