Billy Konchella, the 1987 800-meter world champion, failed to appear at Kenya’s Olympic track and field trials at Nairobi and will not compete in the Seoul Games Sept. 17-Oct. 2. Konchella, fourth in the 800 at the 1984 Olympics, contracted tuberculosis in 1985.

In another blow to Kenya’s track and field team, Peter Koech, who had the best time in the world this year in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, was forced to drop out the 10,000 meters at the trials after three laps. He is recovering from malaria.
