Monrovia : Drug Law for Minors Urged
The Monrovia Drug Awareness Task Force has sent a letter to Assemblyman Richard L. Mountjoy (R-Monrovia) and state Sen. Newton R. Russell (R-Glendale) urging them to draw up legislation that would make it easier to prosecute minors who assist drug dealers.
The task force is made up of City Council members, police officials and volunteers.
“It has come to our attention that these drug dealers are occasionally minors themselves and that minors are being employed as ‘look-outs’ and ‘runners,’ ” the letter states.
The letter recommends that the legislators amend the Welfare and Institutions Code to allow a minor 16 or older to be prosecuted as an adult on charges of “being an accomplice to the manufacture, compounding, or sales” of a controlled substance.
