Warring factions in Lebanon declared a cease-fire on the eve of a parliamentary session to choose a new president. The truce followed a night of violence, with five bombs exploding in West Beirut and Druze and Christian militiamen battling southeast of the capital. Police said one person was killed and four were wounded in the militias’ overnight exchange of mortar and rocket fire. The violence began a few hours after former President Suleiman Franjieh, a Christian leader with close ties to Syria, announced that he will run for president.
