Parting Time

Spare parts takes on a whole new meaning with the look in hair this season. When parting your hair, you can keep on parting it because unusual and multiple part lines are in.

All this emphasis on parts has a lot to do with the 1940s look for longer hair, which is coming back, said Herb Budoff, owner of Pygmalion Hair Design in Tarzana.

“This 1940s look is really coming in with the fall clothes, it can be very dressy,” Budoff said. “The younger girls separate their hair in many directions, sometimes creating a diamond pattern on the head, and pulling the hair up in a Kabuki-like knot at the crown of the head.”

One dramatic 1940s look comes from the “Y” part. The long stem of the “Y” is a sleek, and very precise, side part. The tiny branch on the “Y” is created by flipping back your forelock and securing it with hair spray. “This look is great for dark hair, very glamorous,” Budoff said.

No matter how many parts you have on your head, or what shape, a little highlight always helps to emphasize them. “To highlight the part, we rub a little color, just a little lighter, right at the part line,” Budoff said.

“It’s very subtle. For instance, if your hair were rich brown, we’d highlight the part with honey-colored brown. It’s as if you had a flashlight over your head,” he said.
